Rand_White Street Synagogue

The Tribeca Synagogue in New York presents an exhibition of The 54 Chapter Paintings by Archie Rand. Each painting is based on the weekly parsha and exhibited in order. Displayed for the first time as a solo exhibition, this body of work was first shown at the Jewish Museum in 1989.

28. Chapter Paintings - MetzoraOn Thursday November 19th the Synagogue will host an event celebrating Rand’s exhibition and the release of his new book The 613 (Penguin Random House, 2015). Mr. Rand will give a short talk followed by a book signing and a reception in the gallery.

“A useful date from which to mark the onset of postmodern American Jewish art is 1989. The year that saw the Tiananmen Square massacre, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the premiere of Seinfeld was also the year Archie Rand exhibited at the Jewish Museum in New York a series of fifty-four paintings inspired by the yearly cycle of Torah readings. Jewish artists were by then no strangers to the upper echelons of the American art world, but baldly Jewish iconography was.” – Vincent Brook

“Part circus ringmaster and part vaudevillian, Archie Rand takes us on a rat-a-tat arts-ride that mixes biblical, comic book and movie history in which danger leads to violence on its way to melodrama that plunges into tragedy; a pouring out of panels that provoke, compel, resonate, and go on resonating.” -Jules Feiffer
