Curator David Sperber will present at a conference at the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. His subject will be the art of Helene Aylon.
Sperber will examine Aylon’s Jewish feminist work: its reception and contributions to both Jewish museums and religious communities, by analyzing the interactions between the artist, the curators and rabbis. Noting the gap between the artist’s view of her work, and the way it is understood by the rabbis, Sperber will argue that Aylon challenges the Jewish community with a radical feminist discourse that barely exists in the traditional Jewish world
