This year Passover will be really special in Brooklyn as the Congregation Kol Israel launches the Brooklyn Jewish Art Gallery with their inaugural exhibition “Passover and the Consequences of Freedom.” This exhibition of paintings, graphic work and photographs presents over 50 pieces of contemporary Jewish Art at its most diverse. All works were done within the last decade, most within the last 2 years. This selection of 34 international artists demands an investigation some of the most important themes of Passover and its narrative conclusion, Shavuot.

Naturally the Seder is fully explored from the fundamental exhortation of “No More Chometz” to the participants themselves, especially the four sons, four daughters and the 4 answers concluding in a chilling “In Every Generation.”

The shadow of Moses is glimpsed in both Pharaoh’s Daughter and Tziporah while the Plagues find expression in both Superman and Locusts.

The Exodus itself is seen in manifold abstract expressions as well as literal slosh through the Reed Sea.

The transformative experience at Sinai ranges from depictions of the purely spiritual, abstract, and commandment driven to a hovering mountain and the women’s role in constructing the Mishkan and defining the laws of inheritance with the Daughters of Zelophehid.

The Passover experience as envisioned in contemporary Jewish Art is completed with three works devoted to the Land of Israel.

Passover and the Consequences of Freedom establishes the vibrancy of contemporary Jewish Art as a primary means of connecting Jewish thought with contemporary Jewish visual culture.
