The Jewish Art Salon is accepting submissions for an exhibition at the Manny Cantor Center in NYC, and is inviting artists to submit their work for consideration.

ON THE CONSEQUENCES OF HATE SPEECH

EXHIBITION STATEMENT

Words have always been a catalyst for civil discord and today hate speech is increasingly prevalent, tearing apart the fabric of our communities in ever more violent and destructive ways.  Examples of hate speech are everywhere, in our personal and work lives and in the public sphere, passing from generation to generation by written and spoken word, inculcating attitudes of intolerance, racism and discrimination in both children and adults.

This exhibit illuminates hate speech, its historically destructive manifestations, and its consequences for humanity.  The exhibit also advocates the antidote: educating our children and taking upon ourselves the responsibility to condemn hate speech in all its insidious manifestations.

THE EXHIBIT in its previous incarnation

This exhibition was originally created by Jewish Art Salon members Nancy Current and Robin Atlas; it featured their work and toured Canada and the Pacific North West. The exhibit is being expanded to include artists of different faiths and cultures who deal with the issue of hate speech.

On the Consequences of Hate Speech combined two narratives: Lashon Hara, Robin’s mixed media work with textiles, and L’Dor Vador, Nancy’s works on glass or paper. The two narratives together examine the consequences of hate speech as it relates to both the physical and spiritual realm and its subsequent influence on humanity from generation to generation. The exhibit also included several educational and participatory components for students of all ages and adults. OCHS was installed at the Gallery on the Square on Bowen Island, BC, Canada in May 2017 and was well received by both the public and the press.  

Venue: Manny Cantor Center, New York, NY.

Exhibit dates: December 3 – January 18, 2019

Opening Reception: Date TBD.

Eligibility: 

• All 2-D mediums welcome; artists at all stages in their art career are invited to submit, as long as the submitted works relate to the theme.
• Works must be ready to hang. 
• Particularly artists of faiths and cultures other than Jewish are encouraged to apply. (We are almost at capacity with Jewish art; we are looking primarily for other religions and cultures for this exhibit).

Size Restriction: 4 feet maximum width.

The deadline for submissions is June 30, 2018, 11:59PM 

Notification of acceptance: Late July 2018.

Media: Open to all traditional and non-traditional genre and media.

Curator: Rachel Kanter, Executive Team, Jewish Art Salon.

Assistant curators: Robin Atlas and Nancy Current.

Curatorial advisor: Yona Verwer, Director, Jewish Art Salon.

Commission: Works that sell while on exhibit at Manny Cantor are subject to a 40% commission, artist retains 60%. 

Transportation: Artists are responsible for round trip transportation of their artwork either by dropping off or mailing. Mailed works (USPS, FedEx, UPS) need an enclosed pre-paid return address label. Accepted artists will receive notice where to mail their work.

Application Guidelines:

• All 2-D mediums are welcome (painting, photography, etc.)
• Submit up to 2 images that accurately represent the theme. If you want to submit more than 2, a second submission is required.
• Images should be 300 dpi, 1200 pixels on the shortest side, and should not exceed 10 MB per file.
• Save images as lastname.title_of_work. If the submission file of artwork isn’t saved as requested, the work will not be considered.

Submission:

• All submissions must be sent through Submittable.com. You will need to create an account with Submittable in order to submit.
• No email submissions will be accepted.
