Omanut: Jewish Uptown Arts, an organization devoted to providing free, quality community events with a Jewish theme in Northern Manhattan, will be presenting the second annual “Sukkahwood.” Sukkahwood is a one day community arts festival and will be held on Sunday, September 16th from 12PM-4PM at Inwood Hill Park’s Gaelic Field.
The Jewish Art Salon is a co-sponsor. In addition, three of our artists and one of our curators are participating.
Artists and designers are being commissioned to produce temporary dwelling art
installations in the form of a “Sukkah.” This provides artists and participants an opportunity to see an ancient tradition re-created in a way that maintains its origins and maximizes artistic creativity. According to tradition, a sukkah is a temporary hut in which the Jewish people dwelt to protect themselves from the elements.
“This is the ultimate universal event. Our goal is to share with the world a Jewish holiday that is often forgotten and to bring it into the American mainstream,” said Rabbi Herschel Hartz, who co-directs and co-founded Omanut: Jewish Uptown Arts with his wife, Raiza Malka Hartz. “People have all felt the warmth of a place that they can call home or have thought about the temporal nature of life . These are the main themes of Sukkot.”
Partners and sponsors of the event include the Columbia University Medical Center, the New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA), the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art and Storytelling, the YM & YWHA of Washington Heights and Inwood, Fairway Market, and the Jewish Art Salon. Major support came from the Partnerships for Parks Inwood Parks Grant, made possible by Columbia University. Goldie Gross is returning for her second year curating Sukkahwood 2018. Goldie Gross is a Brooklyn-based artist and curator from Crown Heights. She has curated multiple exhibitions for Jewish Art Salon and other art groups

Manalapan, New Jersey, Robert Bangiola from Hudson, New York, Ellen Hanauer from Livingston, New Jersey, Elizabeth Ashe from Washington, D.C., Rachel Udkoff and Ariadna Cohen from New York, New York, and Ronit Levin Delgado, originally from Tel Aviv, Israel, and currently of New York, New York.
