The longing for an ideal society, where all people are treated with respect, all of their needs are met and we see an end to war and fear – a Utopia – has existed as long as humans have recognized suffering and searched for solutions to end it. Religious, philosophical and political thinkers, dreamers, artists and movements have addressed the question of what would constitute and/or create a “Heaven on Earth” and beyond. How do visual artists grapple with these questions, both drawing from traditions of envisioning a better future and creating their own?
