Artist Ben Schachter will receive the Emma Lazarus Award for his billboard submission to Combat Anti-Semitism. The award ceremony is on March 15th.

Emma Lazarus was a Sephardic Jewish activist in 19th Century America who advocated for a Jewish homeland and for persecuted Jews seeking refuge from anti-Semitism in Europe. She is best known for her poem “The New Colossus” – which transformed the Statue of Liberty from a gift from Europe into an icon of refuge for those fleeing persecution in Europe and beyond. The poem is now inscribed at the base of the statue.
Combat Anti-Semitism (CAS) is a non-partisan, global grassroots movement of individuals and organizations, across all religions and faiths, united around the goal of ending anti-Semitism. CAS supports and highlights the work of its many partner organizations and the efforts of governments and other bodies trying to fight anti-Semitism around the world.
A billboard offers a powerful way to reach the public with a message that quickly grabs individuals passing by. In very few words and with inventive images, ideas can be dramatically transmitted on a large canvas. Because they remain in public view for weeks, billboards reach diverse audiences and hundreds of thousands of new and repeat viewers.
