Creativity in an Uncertain Time

This time of social isolation has led to dramatic shifts in our lives. In this session of Jewish Art Salon’s OPEN STUDIOS, Creativity in an Uncertain Time, curated by Judith Joseph and Dorit Jordan Dotan., the ever attendant questions of  “What was?”, “What is?”,  “What will be?” are explored by three contemporary artists: Cheslyn Amato, Quimetta Perle, and Andi Arnovitz.  

Please join Jewish Art Salon as these artists present their work and discuss how they vision the embrace or rejection of impermanence and approach an unknown and uncertain future. Creativity in an Uncertain Time, will air live on Zoom on Tuesday, October 13 at 12PM EST.

Andi Arnovitz lives and works in Jerusalem, Israel. She is a conceptual artist, using etching, digital information and various printmaking processes, as well as fabric, thread and even porcelain to create both print series, artist books and large-scale installations. Arnovitz’s pieces explore various tensions that exist within religion, gender, and politics.

Andi’s work has been seen in both solo and in group exhibits in England, China, The United States, Israel, Spain, Poland, Finland, France, Germany, Lithuania, Canada, Italy, Mallorca, and Bulgaria. Her work is held in private collections as well as in private and public institutions including the US Library of Congress, the Israel National Library, The Museum of Art in Ein Harod, The Islamic Museum, Yeshiva University Museum, The Museum of the Diaspora, Yale University, UCLA, and The Smithsonian Museum of American History. Quimetta Perle has exhibited her images of empowered women internationally.  Some venues include the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Minnesota Museum and Pratt Institute, with numerous solo and group shows at galleries and non-traditional spaces, including St. Paul laundromats, the St. Pancras crypt in London and a deep space probe blasted out of the NASA Space Flight Center in Hunstville, Alabama. 

Quimetta has worked collaboratively on multimedia performances with notable jazz musicians, spoken word artists and dancers in digital and traditional performances at NYU, Renssellaer Polytechnic, Franklin Furnace, Roulette, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe and PS 122 in New York City.  Perle currently shows with Carter Burden Gallery in Chelsea.  She also works with progressive studio programs supporting artists with disabilities.  She lives and works in Brooklyn. Born in 1958, Cheselyn Amato is a New Jersey girl with NYC at her core. With roots in both Ashkenazi and Sephardic traditions, Cheselyn received the way of Kabbalah via synchronous events over time that created a map deep into the heart of the mystical flame. After earning a BA in studio art and comparative religious studies at Brown University and an MFA in drawing, painting and new genres at Tyler School of Art of Temple University, she went on to teach at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago for twenty years. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the Jewish Museum in NYC, The Contemporary Jewish Museum in SF and Spertus Institute in Chicago.

Cheselyn works in an interdisciplinary mode to envisage this poetics of spirit, mind, heart, and body. She feels compelled to use whatever media and methods necessary to activate the experience of awe and immanence and to act in dedication to tikkun olam, liberation and wholeness.
