Jewish Art Salon invites you to the next live session of our successful online series, OPEN STUDIOS, Creativity in an Uncertain Time, on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at 12PM ET.

Curated by Judith Joseph and Dorit Jordan Dotan, in this program we will be joined by artists Emily Marbach, Deborah Ugoretz, and Karey Kessler as they offer insight into their creative processes and share the impact of the current social order on the psychological and spiritual content of their work.

Please join Jewish Art Salon as these artists present their recent work and discuss how they have addressed the notion of Creativity in an Uncertain Time. This series will air live on Zoom, Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at 12PM EST.

About the artists

Emily Marbach

Emily Marbach is an American figurative artist based in London. Through painting landscapes and adding in narrative through small painted collaged figures, Emily entered the world of collage. Combining collage and printmaking she has created a distinct style. Marbach’s most recent projects have been Jewish in theme. Back in September she exhibited a large collection of collages for the Hidden Identity Project’s Sky of Stars exhibition. The artwork explored the theme of the Bulgarian Jews’ experience during the Holocaust and the little-known fact that none of the Jewish residents of Bulgaria were deported to the death camps. Her other project is the Collage Haggadah which includes over seventy handmade collages exploring the themes of the Passover seder and the Israelite exodus from Egypt. Deborah Ugoretz

Deborah Ugoretz was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  She is recognized by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts as a master Cut -Paper artist.  In 2017-19 she received a grant from the NJSCA- Folk-life Program to mentor an apprentice. For eight years, she was a co-coordinator of an Artist Beit Midrash– artists who study Jewish texts and create visual interpretations. Ugoretz has designed stained glass windows and synagogue art.  She has developed and taught courses about the art of Jewish paper cutting and manuscript illumination at The Museum at Eldridge Street and Yeshiva University Museum, New York and for many institutions in the Tri-State area. Her expressive work -paintings, constructions, and mobiles – deal with the exploration of Feminism, the Natural World and political activism. Her paper constructions seek to communicate through pattern, movement, and shadow. Ugoretz currently lives in Brooklyn, New York and has a studio in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

Karey Kessler

Karey Kessler is a Seattle based artist who explores her experience of time, place, and spirituality using map imagery. She has shown her work widely, including exhibits at the Katonah Art Museum (NY), the Weatherspoon Art Museum (NC), the Tacoma Art Museum (WA), and most recently at the Bellevue Art Museum (WA).  Kessler’s work can be viewed in the flat files of the Pierogi Gallery in New York City and is included in two books: The Map as Art by Kitty Harmon (Princeton Architectural Press, 2009), and From Here to There: A Curious Collection From the Hand Drawn Map Association (Princeton Architectural Press, 2010).  She is currently a member of Shift Gallery in Seattle.
