Jewish Art Salon invites you to the next live session of our successful online series, AFTER THE FLOOD: ReGENESIS.
In this session curated by Judith Joseph and Dorit Jordan Dotan, we will be joined by artists Leah Raab and Ellen Holtzblatt to explore the process of re-creation. We will also share video by famed artist William Kentridge.
In addition to the curators, this program is produced with the support of Jewish Art Salon’s Program Advisor Yona Verwer and team members Cheselyn Amato and Chana Wiesenthal-Elias.

About the Artists
Ellen Holtzblatt, a Chicago-based artist, creates paintings and drawings to explore connections between the physical and the spiritual – the memories of the body that reside in the soul. Her work becomes an allegory for psyche and emotion, evolution and decay.
Holtzblatt exhibits her work across the United States and internationally. Recent group exhibits include the Jerusalem Biennale, Museum of Biblical Art in New York, and Inselgalerie in Berlin. She has had recent solo exhibits at Fermilab Gallery and the Chicago Cultural Center. She has been awarded artist residencies in the U.S. and Iceland, and was a 2019/2020 artist resident with the Chicago Artists Coalition. Holtzblatt earned degrees in visual art and art therapy from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Leah Raab was born in Trenton, New Jersey and began her art studies at the University of New Hampshire. She received her BFA with honors from the Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem and completed her MFA at the New York Studio School. Having moved back and forth many times between the cultures of Israel and the United States, she paints themes of dislocation and belonging. Deeply significant familiar places or moments in time reflect internal tensions in a seemingly tranquil setting, overlaid with a sense of impending doom that may explode at any moment. During the COVID19 pandemic, Leah’s preoccupation is with depicting scenes of outdoor prayer or of praying in isolation.
After ‘’going with the flow’’ during 3 lockdowns, limited mobility for fear of coming in contact with the virus, we learned to appreciate things we took for granted. We navigated Zoom meetings and other online forums. “After the Flood’’ of vaccinations, people were finally reuniting — cherishing and protecting humankind and the gift of life.

Featured Video (not an artist appearance): William Kentridge (born Johannesburg, South Africa, 1955) is internationally acclaimed for his drawings, films, theatre and opera productions.
His method combines drawing, writing, film, performance, music, theatre, and collaborative practices to create works of art that are grounded in politics, science, literature and history, yet maintaining a space for contradiction and uncertainty.
Kentridge’s work has been seen in museums and galleries around the world since the 1990s, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Albertina Museum in Vienna, Musée du Louvre in Paris, Whitechapel Gallery in London, Louisiana Museum in Copenhagen, the Reina Sofia museum in Madrid, the Kunstmuseum in Basel and Zeitz MOCAA and the Norval Foundation in Cape Town. He has participated a number of times in Documenta in Kassel (2012, 2002,1997) and the Venice Biennale (2015, 2013, 2005, 1999 and 1993).

In the early spring of 2020, as the impact of the COVID19 pandemic began to be recognized, the Jewish Art Salon was uniquely positioned as the world’s largest Jewish visual arts organization, with a global network of contemporary artists, curators, art historians and art writers, to pivot its programming to premiere live-streamed, online Studio Salon Sessions .
