Artist Residency Frankfurt Jewish Museum

The Jewish Museum of Frankfurt and DAGESH-Jewish Art in Context are jointly announcing several artistic and fully funded residencies in connection with the exhibition “Revenge: History and Fantasy”.

Deadline to apply December 31, 2021

Vengeance is a colorful word that has an ambiguous character in Jewish cultural history: it is both a component of anti-Semitic projections and the subject of Jewish narratives. This ambivalence could be one of the reasons why the topic has not yet been the subject of museum scrutiny. The exhibition “Revenge: History and Fantasy” at the Jewish Museum Frankfurt aims to change this. It spans a cultural-historical arc from Jewish fantasies of revenge to historical acts of revenge by Jews. The starting point of the exhibition are biblical stories and pop cultural narratives in which overpowering figures stand up for the powerless and take revenge on their tormentors. “Vengeance: History and Fantasy” takes the feelings associated with these stories seriously and strengthens the idea of Jewish self-empowerment.

For the duration of the exhibition, the museum and DAGESH invite artists to deal with the theme of the show in 10 to 14-day residences. The residencies are planned at the beginning of each month (Monday, April 4th to Sunday, April 17th, 2022; Monday, May 2nd to Sunday, May 15th, 2022; Monday, June 6th to Sunday, June 19th, 2022 and Monday, July 4th to Sunday, May 15th, 2022; Monday, June 6th to Sunday, June 19th, 2022 and Monday, July 4th to Sunday, July 17th, 2022), whereby the periods are to be understood as orientation points. Please indicate in your application which periods you prefer.

The residencies include the one-time reimbursement of travel expenses, accommodation in Frankfurt am Main and a work grant of € 2,000.

During your stay in Frankfurt, you are expected to work in a specially designated room of the exhibition, to present your project to the public and to document or make it available for the website for the exhibition.

Artists who are active in the performative, literary, musical or visual arts and have a positioned view of contemporary Jewish perspectives and experiences are invited to apply.

Please apply with a concise project idea, your portfolio and your résumé by December 31, 2021 by email to: info@dagesh.de. Subject: “Call for Artists in Residence 2022”.
