At the JADA Art Fair, which ended last night: “In Thy Tent I Dwell”, installation by Jônatas Chimen Dias DaSilva-Benayon @artofjonatas
His best known artwork on Diaspora and Immigration was first featured in at The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum and then at the JMOF Museum. This installation retells the stories of immigration, adaptation, forced conversions, and hybridization of the artist's family through their 500-year Diaspora.
Foregoing a linear narrative, Chimen has produced a multi-sensory experience of nostalgia by painting, threading, writing, and appliqueing on photographs, birth certificates, inquisitional archives, and immigration documents onto the outside of a tent-like structure. Interspersed amongst these are fragments of testimonials that the artist has hand-written, in addition, chanting, and sounds found in the domestic sphere emanate from the structure's interior, as does hints of smells of spices – a nod to its role in trade and migration. The tears in the canvas allow for a partial glimpse of the inside – perhaps a metaphor for the secrecy connected to Marranism, a social condition which his family was forced to adopt as far back as the Spanish Inquisition in the fifteenth century. .

CONFRONTATION- CONVERSATION at The @jerusalembiennale
Curated by @mirta_kupferminc, 18 Argentinian artists built a group landscape that resembles a page of the Talmud, in which all comments are located around the central text. None of the images is more important than the other, and nobody remains anonymous. The theme is around a ”Dispute" - "Majlocket". On view at Hechal Shlomo until November 28, 2019.
The initial step was the group study of the text. Afterwards came the interpretation and the subsequent personal research. The task was presented : it was necessary to bring the passage from the Talmud to the contemporary art language, thus extending the text to other dimensions.
.
@judithwaldmann , @silvanablasbalg , Ana Zlatkes, @mirtagendin , Karina Kipershmit, and Monica Nejamen raise a question about the relationship between nature and mankind and the responsibility for looking after the planet that we inhabit.
@silviaholzkanarte talks in her works about free will, and @saraslipchinsky , about territorial invasions. @noemischneck , @gabiesterovich , @sandraciccioli , @analia.hahn and @carla.beretta.33 rethink different possibilities of coexistence. María Esther Foggia chose the danger of technology and human work, while @glazmancecilia reflects on the “Other” and on oneself. @arturo_mercado deals with cultural discriminatory categories, while Mariela Monferrer is concerned about the social responsibility on breast cancer treatments . .
Jewish Art Salon member Mirta Kupferminc (1955) is an Argentine multidisciplinary artist, curator, lecturer and teacher, who lives and works in Buenos Aires. Shows her art internationally since 1977, had more than 100 solo exhibitions.

"Reliquary: An Ascent", by @donisilversimons , created for and premiering at the @jerusalembiennale , emerged from an act of vandalism. It explores the process required to achieve a resolution.
In Reliquary II, paint and charcoal superimposed over the vandalized work camouflage its defacement; a low wooden birthing chair suggests death (the practice of sitting shiva - a seven day mourning ritual), while also alluding to rebirth by its intended use. A rough-hewn table with an aged toolbox, a metaphor for both mediation and burial, serve as the reliquary. Paper fragments reflect the destruction of the artistic ideal reminding us that conscious acts of violation can never be totally contained.
The video and installation can be seen at Hechal Shlomo museum until Nov 28, 2019.

"Badim", by Ruth Kestenbaum Ben-Dov, at the @jerusalembiennale . The work ponders the possibility of reconciliation between text and image, between holiness and body.
A raw canvas printed with a Talmudic text is gradually covered, primed white in preparation for painting, as the text disappears. In the left-hand canvas a faint image of a woman’s body emerges. On her belly traces of the Talmudic text reappear, in flesh and canvas tones, describing the poles that bore the Ark of the Covenant in the temple: “[The poles] probed and protruded outside the curtain like a woman’s breasts."
Featured in the "Not In Heaven" exhibition, curated by Judy Cardozo and Susan Fraiman at @kolhaot Hutzot HaYotzer Artist's Colony. Until November 28, 2019.
1999, oil on canvas (with screen-printed text from the Babylonian Talmud, Yoma 54), four parts, 53.5 X 162 cm /21″ X 64″', private collection, Jerusalem (photograph: Yona Schley).
