This one-day event on November 10 in NYC explores the Jewish experience in Spanish-speaking lands with a day long event of film, speakers, music, and culinary experiences.
Jewish communities have flourished in Spain, South and Central America, and elsewhere throughout the Spanish-speaking world. Join us as we explore part of this rich culture!
11:30 AM – Two Films, “Cuba’s Forgotten Jewels” and “Bound for Nowhere”.
Followed by Professor Ronnie Perelis, Yeshiva University.
2:00 PM – Professor Laura Limonic, author of “Kugel and Frijoles”.
3:15 PM – Musical Performance and Talk by Dr. Samuel R Torjman Thomas, Asefa Music.
4:30 PM – World-renowned chef and prolific author, Joan Nathan – Talk, Food demonstration, and Food Tasting – Followed by a Wine Tasting by Royal Wine’s Wine Education Manager Gabriel Geller.

Starting at 11:30AM, Professor Perelis, Associate Professor of Sephardic Studies at Yeshiva University, introduces two intriguing films—“Cuba’s Forgotten Jewels: A Haven in Havana” and “Bound for Nowhere: The St. Louis Episode.”
Professor Perelis is followed by Limonic, Assistant Professor of Sociology at SUNY College of Old Westbury and author of
Kugel and Frijols Latino Jews in the United States on Latino Jews in the United States.
At 3:15PM, Dr. Torjman Thomas, multi-instrumentalist, composer, bandleader, and a professor of ethnomusicology and Jewish studies, takes the stage for a musical performance.
The event is topped off by renowned chef and prolific author Nathan, who’ll talk about the role of food in Latino-Jewish culture and offer a tasting of the cuisine. After Nathan, Wine Education Manager at Royal Wine, Gabriel Geller, will provide a wine-tasting for participants.
All day passes to Shalom Bienvenidos are $40 and are available until Friday, November 8.
Tickets to individual talks by Professor Perelis, Professor Limonic, and Dr. Torjman Thomas are $7 each, while tickets to Joan Nathan’s talk, food demonstration, and food and wine tasting are $25.
