Deborah Ugoretz has been creating Jewish Marriage Contracts (Ketubot)for over 40 years. She has developed and taught courses about the art of Jewish paper cutting and manuscript illumination at The Museum at Eldridge Street and Yeshiva University Museum, New York and for many institutions in the Tri-State area. Her papercuts, paintings, constructions and mobiles – deal with the exploration of feminism, the Natural World and political issues. She seeks to bring two things to her audience: an awareness of the natural world and the profound meaning and relevance of Jewish texts.
Deborah Ugoretz was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She received her BS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Fine Art. She is recognized by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts as a master Cut -Paper artist. In 2017-19 she received a grant from the NJSCA- Folk-life Program to mentor an apprentice. For eight years, she was a co-coordinator of an Artist Beit Midrash- a community of artists who study Jewish texts and create visual interpretations.
