The Museum at Eldridge Street presents a new exhibition of vintage postcards from Prague-based collector Frantisek Bányai. Focusing on scenes of Jewish life at the turn of the last century, these images are poignant reminders of a world that no longer exists.
Many of the postcards that will be shown depict synagogue that were lost during the Holocaust, including the synagogue in the Stare Miasto, the old city in Lodz, Poland, shown in the postcard above. Both beautiful and poignant, the postcards offer a view of a time and place that no longer exist – synagogues, people on their way to prayer, celebrating and sending greetings in a vanished Eastern Europe of a century ago.
The public is invited to see this moving exhibition, and tour the landmark Eldridge Street Synagogue, the first synagogue built in the United States by Eastern European Jews.
