Throwback Thursday: our session with @thebookofsarahlightman who gave a tour of her exhibit GRAPHIC DETAILS: CONFESSIONAL COMICS BY JEWISH WOMEN at the YU Museum in NYC. Co-curated by Michael Kaminer.
This exhibition resulted in Sarah's award-winning book, Graphic Details, a compilation of scholarly essays, interviews, and reproductions of some of the comics that appear in the exhibition.
Sarah has exhibited in several JAS exhibitions; JOMIX: Jewish Comics-Art & Derivation, the Jerusalem Biennale 2017, and the Derfner Museum.

"For this series of paintings, I studied a Talmudic passage from the tractrate of Shabbat in which the rabbinical sages interpret a text from Exodus that interprets the biblical phrase “zeh keli ani v’anvehu" to mean "This is my G-d I will beautify or embellish Him." This painting is part of a series that began as a meditation on the notion of beauty in response to a photo a friend shared years ago of bottles, or empty vessels, refracting the sunlight. The bottles were intense colors and the light passing through them was striking. This image stayed with me as I explored the idea that in creating beauty the artist mimics the acts of the Creator, much like Shabbat is part of the weekly reenactment of G-d's act of creation" @stacyleeman .

The Jewish Art Salon has launched a teeny tiny micro grant for students interested in Jewish art. Funds are not restricted: students can use them to buy art supplies, or to go on a coffee date with a friend.
July micro grant: $25
Eligibility: Applicants must be UNDERGRADUATE college students, have some involvement with art, and have an interest in Jewish art.
Winners of this grant automatically become Jewish Art Salon Student Fellows, if they are not currently.

The only avenue left open to me is to use my professional tools as an artist and a filmmaker and make my voice heard by means external to the religious world.- Nurit Jacobs Yinon on “A Tale of a Woman with a Robe,” which caused the Ministry of Religious Services to change their regulations to forbid dayanim from standing directly in front of the mikveh.
