susan c. dessel, New York-based conceptual artist, left a successful corporate career in 1998 to study Studio Art at the City University of NY (BFA Hunter College, 2003. MFA Brooklyn College, 2006). Her work has been exhibited in the U.S., London, Prague, & Yerevan, Armenia.
In 2011 Dessel was a Visiting Artist at the Umm el-Fahem Art Gallery (Umm el-Fahem, Israel) and since 2012 has served on the Board of the American Friends of the Umm el-Fahem Museum of Contemporary Art.
Dessel was the first visual artist invited to participate as a Fellow, University of Michigan Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies (2013/14). There she researched the life and work of Martha Gruening (1889-1937) suffragist, civil rights activist, … The artist’s BRICK IN A SOFT HAT (Portraiture of Martha Gruening) Series 2 Nos. 1-8, drawings and text based on Gruening’s life, are included in the University of Edinburgh’s 2016 2017 DANGEROUS WOMEN PROJECT.
Dessel’s new installation PIECES OF PEACE will be among the work by US-based artists working on Israeli-Palestinian conflict to be exhibited in the September 2017 group show FAR FROM THE FRONT LINES (Evanston Art Center, IL).
Dessel’s art considers the responsibility we each have to effect social change through our actions or inaction and leaves it to the viewers to interpret this for themselves.
