Call for Art – Coming of Age, Montclair, NJ

The Upstairs Gallery at Congregation Shomrei Emunah in Montclair, NJ is accepting submissions for their Fall 2018 exhibition COMING OF AGE/  הִתְבַּגְּרוּת

(This is not a call for art by the Jewish Art Salon, but a third-party listing)

In the Jewish tradition, the bar or bat mitzvah ceremony is widely considered to be a pivotal moment in the bar or bat mitzvah’s Jewish life—the day on which he or she is officially welcomed into the Jewish adult community, publicly accepting the responsibilities and ritual obligations of an adult member of his or her religious community.  In recent decades, the ceremony has been hugely expanded and amplified, and yet its core meaning has remained the same: marking the passage of time from child to adult. There are as many shades of meaning to the idea of “coming of age” as there are works of art. The Upstairs Gallery is therefore calling on artists to interpret the theme freely.
