The Heller Museum at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York invites artists to submit artwork for their next exhibition, opening in August 2025, entitled Proverbs, Maxims, and Adages.
The curator writes:
We seek to present an exhibition exploring the enduring relevance and meaning of proverbs, adages, and maxims as universal sources of wisdom for our challenging times. From the Book of Proverbs in the Hebrew Bible and across all faiths and cultures, concise and memorable sayings express moral values and offer motivational guidance for righteous living. Reflecting the values and experiences of diverse communities, their thoughtful insights are embedded into popular culture and are part of our collective consciousness.
Beginning with King Solomon’s instruction to his sons, “only fools hate wisdom and discipline,” the broad range of messaging includes the following, and more: Actions speak louder than words….Don’t count your chickens before they hatch….Where there’s smoke, there’s fire….Haste makes waste….A penny saved is a penny earned….It’s better to be safe than sorry….You’re never too old to learn….Opposites attract….Love is blind….You can’t teach an old dog new tricks….Birds of a feather flock together….Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Each saying projects a powerful visual image, whether representational or conceptual. In fact, we ask that the quotation be the title of your work, as, for example, consider “Gray hair is the crown of glory” for a visual representation.
The exhibition may include all fine art media in all sizes, but sculptures must be wall mounted or small in scale.
Think about what you can conceptualize. Please feel free to call or write me at any time if you wish to discuss your ideas and plans.
Please email me for a submission form.
Submit your work for consideration no later than the end of February. Accepted works will be confirmed in March
I look forward to hearing from you!
