August 29 – September 29, 2016

Opening Reception, Thursday, September 1, 6 – 8 pm

Artists Gallery Talk: Thursday, September 8, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

All art work in the exhibit reflects the artists’ interpretation of compelling themes taken from the Hebrew text of 150 Psalms. The way in which the Psalms are imagined may vary with each reading. Many quotes from Psalms are known to people across several faiths and to those who have heard the Psalms in context of poetry. Often we are surprised to discover that the source of the inspiring words has come from the compilation of Psalms that have been inspiration and consolation for people around the world. They have captured the imagination of many because of their beauty and imagery.

The paintings of Fred Spinowitz are the subject and interaction between him and six photographers. The artists and viewers will engage in a visual conversation while thinking about the poetry of the psalms. To encourage a visual dialogue, we will have unlined sketchbooks and markers at strategic locations in the gallery. Viewers are invited to write or draw their impressions of each Psalm while experiencing the artists’ renderings.

At the start of the process, photo artists were asked to review a list of 150 sentences from each of the Psalms. The work of Fred Spinowitz was a three-year project of mixed media water color, print and ink. The six photo artists each selected three sentences and did not look at corresponding Spinowtz art until after they completed their work.

The motivation comes from the words of Psalms and helped to get the exciting visual conversation started. At times, there were similarities in color or composition, and at times there was a dynamic counterpoint of the work. In all cases, a breakthrough for interactive arts has been made. The entire Spinowitz portfolio will be available in the gallery.
