Sarah Lightman studied at The Slade School of Art for her BA and MFA.  Sarah is researching a PhD  at the University of Glasgow on “Dressing Eve and other Reparative Acts in Women’s Autobiographical Comics”,  and her writings have been published internationally in numerous books and journals.  Sarah is co-founder and co-director, with Nicola Streeten of Laydeez do Comics the UK’s foremost comics forum, women led monthly and open to all, that  focuses on autobiography and the drama of the everyday. There are now branches in London, Leeds, Glasgow, Bristol, Dublin, Birmingham, San Francisco and Chicago. Sarah co-curated numerous exhibitions including the internationally touring exhibition Graphic Details: Confessional Comics by Jewish Women.

Awards:

Whilst a student at The Slade she won numerous scholarships including The Slade Life Drawing Prize,  The Slade Duveen Travel Scholarship, The Slade Sessional Prize for Excellence,  The William Coldstream Sessional Prize for Excellence,  A Travel and Expeditions Award from UCL, and a Post Graduate Scholarship  from the British Academy. More recently her art shows and curated  projects have been funded by  the  European Association for Jewish Culture and The David Foundation. Sarah’s book Graphic Details: Jewish Women’s Confessional Comics in Essays and Interviews (McFarland 2014) was the first book on Jewish women and comics and was awarded the 2015 Will Eisner Award for Best Scholarly Work on Comics and The 2015 Susan Koppelman Prize for Best Feminist Anthology awarded by the Popular Culture Association/ American Culture Association.
